Quiz Night – 19th September 2024
A fun-filled evening for a great cause
On Thursday, 19th September, local quiz teams gathered at Carrow Road for another terrific Quiz Night organised by Norwich City Fans’ Social Club. With the atmosphere buzzing, the teams were in for a lively evening of trivia, prizes and generosity.
Our Quiz Night was expertly hosted by Connor Southwell, Chief Norwich City Reporter for the Pink Un, EDP24, and Norwich Evening News. Ably supported by question-setter Amy. Connor’s quizmaster skills kept the evening running smoothly as 33 teams battled it out for the coveted title of quiz champions.
The teams: a few ‘quizzical’ names to remember
With team names as clever as the questions themselves, the competition was fierce. Standout names included “Never Gonna Quiz You Up” (anyone else humming that tune?), Oasis-themed “Champagne Superknowers,” and “60% of the Time, We Are Correct All the Time”—a nod to the questionable confidence we all feel at the start of a quiz night!
Rounds that tested & entertained
The quiz featured a wide range of topics, from history to sports, TV to geography. In the history round, teams had to recall that Julius Caesar led the Roman invasion of Britain in 55 BC (Caesar wasn’t just a salad, after all). Meanwhile, sports buffs enjoyed tackling questions like “Which footballer has scored the most goals in World Cup history?” (Miroslav Klose, if you were wondering).
During the food and drink round, the question: “What was the original name for a Snickers bar in the UK?” sparked a few nostalgic reflections about the good ol’ days of the Marathon bar.
For the TV lovers in the room, it was fun to remember that Frasier was a spin-off from Cheers and that Virgil Tracy pilots the green Thunderbird 2 in Thunderbirds.
And let’s not forget the “Guess the Year” round, which took quizzers on a trip down memory lane, from the break-up of The Beatles in 1970, to climate activist Greta Thunberg’s birthday in 2003. Even Mr. Blobby’s unforgettable 1993 Christmas number one made an appearance (love him or hate him, you couldn’t escape him that year!).
Champions have the last laugh
When the results were announced, team “Game for a Laugh” took home the top prize with their impressive trivia prowess, proving that laughter really is the best medicine. Hot on their heels were “Brown & Co Brains” in second place, while “Trust Us” secured a solid third.
However, not everyone could walk away victorious. “We the Ones” may have finished last, but they did so with grace, earning the night’s Wooden Spoon award.

Auction: bidding for a cause
Alongside the trivia, there was an exciting auction packed with fantastic prizes, all raising funds for the Community Sports Foundation.
First up was a signed Norwich City Replica Home Shirt for the 2024-25 season, generously donated by Norwich City Football Club. The shirt fetched an impressive £85, with Sam Lincoln taking it home. A hotly contested item was the all-day boat hire for nine people, kindly donated by Gordon Anderson of Chips Away. Ian Woods from team “Ben Quiz-ene” secured this perfect Norfolk Broads day-out for £200.
Golfers weren’t left out either, as a Norwich 4-Ball at the Royal Norwich Country and Golf Club donated by Fosters Solicitors brought in another £200, this time won by Matt Firman from “The Bors.” A signed Norwich City Replica Away Shirt for 2024-25 was also up for grabs, with a final bid of £100 from Ronnie Moulton.
But the showstopper of the night was undoubtedly the Norwich City Media Matchday Experience, kindly donated by Dan Houlker, Norwich City’s Head of Communications. The chance to go behind the scenes on matchday was eventually scooped up for £360 by Nick Next of “The Misfits.”
Alongside these fantastic prizes, Ben secured the Framed NCFC Beer Mats, donated by Des Fulcher, with a winning bid of £125 in our silent auction.
Heads & Tails: a game of chance
The evening wasn’t just about using brainpower; there was plenty of fun to be had in the classic Heads & Tails competition. Participants stood up and guessed the outcome of a coin toss by placing their hands on either their heads or their tails. The tension built with each round, but it was Elliot King from the team “Having a Mair” who kept his cool and claimed victory.
Raffle prizes galore
Rounding out the evening was our famous raffle, packed with prizes offering something for everyone.
Foodies could enjoy a £20 cake voucher, kindly donated by Piece of Cake in Colitishall, or a £20 meal voucher from the ever-popular Murderers Pub in Norwich.
For the Norwich City faithful, there were some special items up for grabs, including a warm-up top signed by former favourite Gabriel Sara and a signed, player-issued Onel Hernandez away shirt from the 2023-24 season.
With thanks to our sponsor & volunteers
The evening was generously sponsored by Fosters Solicitors, ensuring all proceeds from the night went to the Community Sports Foundation. In total, the event raised an impressive £3,100 for the charity, supporting their invaluable work which makes such a big difference in the local community.
Of course, our Quiz Night wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of the social club volunteers and helpers.
Our next event
With that, we’ll see you at our next Norwich City Fans’ Social Club event: a Fans’ Forum with Norwich City head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup, accompanied by assistant head coach Glen Riddersholm. Taking place at Carrow Road on Wednesday 23rd October, starting at 7:15pm. See you there!
