Volunteers in the spotlight on BBC Radio Norfolk’s The Scrimmage
On the latest episode of The Scrimmage, hosted by Jack Maclean and Chris Reeve on BBC Radio Norfolk, two special guests shared the spotlight: Diane Blazier, founder of the Norwich City Fans’ Social Club, and long-time social club volunteer Mike Ward.
They sat down to discuss the remarkable work their organisation does for the local community and the deep impact they’ve made since their founding. Together, they revealed the incredible work the social club is doing to unite fans and raise funds for Norwich City Football Club’s official charity, the Community Sports Foundation (CSF).
“It’s about bringing fans together through social events,” Mike explained. “We all share a love of Norwich City, and our events—held mostly at Carrow Road—are a chance to connect and have fun.”
They explained how the club runs fan forums, quizzes, football tournaments, family fun days, and more, all while raising money for the Community Sports Foundation, which supports children and adults with disabilities, as well as disadvantaged people in the local community.
Diane proudly shared their progress: “We’ve now raised over £75,000 since starting in 2015, and we’re aiming for £100,000.” She added, “The money makes a real difference. It’s helping programmes like Duncan’s Club continue. That means the world to us.”
Mental health awareness is also a big focus. Mike noted, “Our Mental Health Awareness Evening has grown into almost a convention. It’s one of our most important events.”
The club relies on volunteers, and fans can get involved simply by turning up to events. “You don’t need to join, just come along!” Diane said.
Chris Reeve emphasised the broader impact of the social club on the community: “The Norwich City Fans’ Social Club is a key pillar of the Norwich City community. It’s accessible to everyone, so welcoming, and run entirely by volunteers. It’s a win for everyone involved.”
Throughout the interview, Diane and Mike acknowledged that the success of the Norwich City Fans’ Social Club is thanks to the support of the fans, volunteers, sponsors, and Norwich City Football Club itself. Diane gave special thanks to Foster Solicitors, who have supported the social club since 2017, covering event expenses so that every penny raised can go to the CSF.
With more events lined up, including a 6-a-side football tournament at The FDC in Bowthorpe, the Norwich City Fans’ Social Club continues to be a shining example of fans coming together for a great cause.
